Toshiba creates a system to detect cancer with a single drop of blood

This new technology will be able to diagnose up to 13 types of cancer even in the initial phase

The detection of up to 13 types of cancer with a single drop of blood will be possible thanks to a technology that Toshiba has developed. The Japanese corporation has developed a tool that will confirm the presence of the disease from its initial phase with an effectiveness of 99%, as indicated by the results of the tests carried out so far.

As Toshiba reported in a statement, the new detection device analyzes the micro-molecules of ribonucleic acid (or micro-RNA) in the sample (a drop of blood) for early identification of cancer patients.

It will detect gastric, esophageal, lung, liver, biliary tract, pancreas, intestinal, ovarian, prostate, bladder, and breast cancers, as well as sarcoma and glioma. The system completes the diagnosis process in less than two hours and its approximate cost is about 20,000 yen (approximately 165 euros).

This diagnostic system has been developed in collaboration with the Institute of the National Cancer Research Center of Japan (NCCRI) and the Tokyo Medical University. It is expected that throughout 2020 it will be tested to be able to implement it in the near future.

“Using this newly developed micro-RNA detection technology, we can expect early detection of cancer with great effectiveness. This allows early treatment and contributes to improving the survival of the patient and their quality of life ”, says the statement from the technology company.

Toshiba Corporation will provide more details on this technology at the next annual meeting of the Society for Molecular Biology of Japan in Fukuoka City, to be held from December 3-8.
