Peru is consolidated as the second world supplier of avocados

With the signing of the phytosanitary protocol between Peru and China, Peru managed to explain in 2016 14% of the avocado quota imported by China.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri) announced that Peru exported 247 thousand tons of avocado last year, which represented an increase of 27% compared to 2016, and made our country the second largest producer in the world of avocado.

The avocado shipments have been mainly of the Hass variety.

This last figure meant sales of around US $ 580 million, which represented an increase of 46% compared to what was exported in 2016.

There are six countries (Holland, the United States, Spain, England, China and Chile) that acquired 95% of the exported value of Peruvian avocado during 2017.

Avocado production
On the other hand, the national avocado production in 2017 exceeded 470 thousand tons, which meant an increase of 3.4% compared to what was produced in 2016, with the departments of La Libertad, Lima, Ica and Junín accounting for 80 % of national production.

At the zone level, the good dynamism of avocado production in the south (grew 15%) and the north (+ 12%) of the country should be highlighted, being the departments of Ayacucho (+ 49%), Arequipa (+26 %), Lambayeque (+ 20%), La Libertad (+ 11%) and Junín (+ 7%), which have registered a notable contribution to productive performance during 2017 despite the onslaught of the coastal FEN.

Avocado is the third most important product in the agro-export basket, behind coffee and grapes.

According to figures from the Trade Map to 2016, Peru is considered the second world supplier of avocados in volume, being only surpassed by Mexico.

Avocado health
One of the biggest impulses in the placing of avocados in the world market has been due to the intervention of the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa), which between 2015 and 2016 implemented phytosanitary protocols for the access of our fruit to the market of China, which involves a market of 1.4 billion consumers.
