Peruvian archaeologists believe that in Checta, a prehistoric stone forest, there are signs of writing dating back five thousand years. The hypothesis is based on the signs discovered in several petroglyphs found in Lima.

The archaeologist considers that the most important achievement of the investigation consists in the definition of the chronology of the figures represented in the petroglyphs. The scientist has revealed the four stages of the development of the found writing.

In the first stage (2,500 - 2,000 BC) small holes appear in the stones. The second phase of the development of writing belongs to the interval from 2,200 to 1,000 BC. and is represented by geometric shapes: circles, points, crosses, spirals, straight lines and others. In the third phase (1,200 to 600 BC) semi-naturalistic motifs appear. Finally, the fourth phase (800-200 BC) was represented by images of snakes.

What struck the archaeologist is that similar signs have been found elsewhere in Peru. If Echevarría`s hypothesis is true, that would mean that Andean writing is actually much older.
