The M2 Max chip is tested at Geekbench and reveals its possible performance.

Apple`s next processor for future MacBook Pros could come with subtle performance improvements over the M1 Max chip.

A possible M2 Max chip, which will be the processor that renews the M1 Max of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros announced in 2021, has appeared on Geekbench showing both its main specifications and its score after a performance test. Two aspects that allow us to know a preview of the improvements in terms of power that could come to the new Macs.

The alleged M2 Max is equipped in a "Mac 14.4," a name that could refer either to a new MacBook Pro or a refreshed Mac Studio, according to MacRumors. Geekbench indicates that the model features 96 GB of RAM, a capacity currently only available in the mentioned Apple desktop computer. Additionally, the device is running on macOS 13.2, a version that is not even available in beta phase for developers.

The SoC (System on a Chip) specifically reveals information about its CPU, which will have 12 cores (two more cores than the M1 Max chip). It achieved a single-core score of 1853 and a multi-core score of 13855. These results are very similar to those obtained by the M1 Max chip in its respective performance tests, with 1755 in single-core and 12333 in multi-core. Therefore, the improvements of the M2 Max chip in terms of power compared to the M1 Max may not be as significant as those we have seen with the M2 chip compared to the M1.

When will the first Macs with the M2 Max chip arrive?

When will the first Macs with the M2 Max chip arrive?

The performance test of the alleged M2 Max chip is another indication of the imminent arrival of new Macs to Apple`s lineup. In fact, according to Bloomberg sources, the Cupertino company could announce new models at any time or, at the latest, during the spring of 2023.

It is expected that the M2 Max chip, along with the M2 Pro, will first arrive in the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, which would maintain the same design and other features as the current generation, including the MagSafe port, HDMI connector, and the absence of the Touch Bar.

The RAM configuration shown by the model that has undergone performance testing, as mentioned before, is currently only available in the Mac Studio. Therefore, it would not be surprising if Apple refreshed this device with the new M2 Max chip, even though some rumors indicated that the company intended to discontinue this model to make way for a Mac Pro with Apple Silicon. However, this Mac Pro could potentially come with a much more powerful SoC than the one that will be replacing the M1 Max.
